Hiking! tours
Hiking! is a non profit volunteer group that runs walking tours.
The format of the trips is that we hire a nice hotel, (around the 3½ to 4 star range if possible), for four nights and offer people a choice of an easy, medium or hard grade walk each day. All walks are led by experienced guides. There are 28 to 45 people on each trip. The prices range between $150 and $215 for four nights, usually in a twin share room and all walk costs, including any transfers on the walks by mini bus, ferry, train or chairlift.
So far we have run 15 trips in this format to appealing walking destinations including:
Falls Creek and the Bogong High Plains Dinner Plain, Hotham and the Great Alpine Road
Halls Gap and The Grampians The Baw Baw Plateau and Walhalla
Thredbo and the Snowy Mountains Mt Mawson and Mt Field National Park (Tasmania)
Marysville: forests and mountains
Possible future destinations are:
Cradle Mountain (Tasmania) Katoomba and the Blue Mountains (N.S.W.)
Portland: sea capes, river gorges and volcanoes Maria Island (Tasmania). (But only if we able to hire the VIP terrace houses on the island.)
We run one or two trips in this format each year. Each trip lasts 5 days and 4 nights. They are run either at Boxing Day, Easter or Cup Weekend.
The trips are run efficiently, but as informally as possible. We are strictly non profit, the walk guides get a free trip but are not paid, which is one reason the trip prices are fairly low.
There is an email list of around 170 people, to be added to the list you generally need to be suggested by someone we know or by a person who has been on one of our trips in the last few years. If you wish to know more, send a message to: hikingmelbourne at gmail dot com.
Occasionally we also run other trips such as snow walks in Victoria. These can range from gentle explorations of Mt Donna Buang to a challenging winter ascent of the West Face of Mt Buller or climbing Mt Feathertop with an introduction to snow camping.
